Uso de controladores biológicos en Rapa Nui: en la senda de una agricultura más limpia

Una delegación integrada por los entomólogos Natalia Olivares Pacheco y Fernando Rodríguez Alvarez, se trasladó hasta la isla para realizar actividades comprometidas en el proyecto “Manejo Integrado de Plagas Biointensivo con productores familiares hortofrutícolas de Rapa Nui”, que cuenta con el financiamiento de la Fundación para la Innovación Agraria (FIA) y el Instituto de Desarrollo Agropecuario (INDAP) y cuyo propósito es reducir las aplicaciones de agroquímicos a las hortalizas y frutales en Rapa Nui.

De acuerdo a lo señalado por la directora de proyecto, Ingeniero agrónomo Mg.  Natalia Olivares Pacheco, esta es la primera liberación de enemigos naturales que se realiza en el marco de este proyecto.  Aunque, recordó, INIA cuenta con una historia y experiencia en el control biológico de plagas mediante la introducción de enemigos naturales en Rapa Nui, que comenzó abordando el control biológico de la mosca doméstica, programa que se extendió a otras plagas hortofrutícolas durante más de 10 años en la década de los 80.

Esta liberación de la chinita Cryptolaemus montrouzieri en cultivos como la piña constituye una contribución relevante  para Rapa Nui, ya que mientras más estrategias respetuosas del ambiente se usen, más eficiente y sustentable es el manejo de plagas.

El cultivo de la piña, principalmente de la variedad pascuense, es una de las especies frutales más demandadas en el mercado de la isla, debido a su color, dulzor, sabor y aroma.

Las liberaciones de la chinita podrían aumentar en la medida que avanza el proyecto y es una acción de control que se suma al control cultural, físico  y químico para manejar particularmente el chanchito blanco.

Con un adecuado manejo de la chinita Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, depredador que actúa sobre algunas especies de chanchitos blancos, se espera reducir las poblaciones de la plaga y establecer un equilibrio entre ambas especies.

La experta mencionó que disminuir el uso de plaguicidas en los agroecosistemas de Chile  es un desafío institucional. “La producción de hortalizas y frutales de la isla requiere mantener una condición fitosanitaria acorde con el cuidado del medioambiente, la salud humana y los recursos suelo/agua no contaminados”.

 

Día de campo

 

Los casi 30 agricultores asociados a su cultivo que asistieron al día de campo organizado por el INIA La Cruz en Rapa Nui, vivieron esta gran experiencia siendo partícipes de la liberación de los insectos benéficos en un predio demostrativo, que fue precedida por una charla preparada por los investigadores entomólogos Natalia Olivares y Fernando Rodríguez, orientada a conocer en forma práctica cómo funciona el control biológico y poder reconocer las distintas formas que presenta durante su desarrollo el enemigo natural Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, insecto depredador de especies de chanchitos blancos, y en particular de aquellos que afectan el cultivo de piña.

 

A través de material gráfico impreso a color que les fue entregado a los asistentes, se enfatizó las diferencias entre las larvas del insecto benéfico y la plaga, que suelen ser confundidos por personas que no han sido capacitadas específicamente.

 

El recorrido por el predio también permitió a los especialistas explicar y reforzar otros conceptos en forma práctica, como reconocer donde se encuentran localizados los chanchitos en la planta; corroborar que la mayor presencia de la plaga ocurre en meses de verano, dato que es importante para realizar liberaciones oportunas, como también la alternativa de realizar “siembras” o repicaje de las chinitas, cuando su disponibilidad en ciertos sectores permita transportarlas a otras parcelas.

 

La investigadora en entomología resaltó que un manejo adecuado de la sanidad vegetal en la isla es clave para asegurar la sustentabilidad de la producción de alimentos. “Estamos muy conformes con los avances de este proyecto que además considera otras especies hortofrutícolas relevantes para Rapa Nui y queremos seguir aportando con nuevas herramientas a un ecosistema que, como se sabe, ha estado sometido a presiones antrópicas y ambientales de consideración”.
